Pulver Returns To Minnesota; Target Center Card Taking Shape

The much-hyped CFX/Extreme Challenge promoted event scheduled for December 12 at Target Center has it's headline figher: former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver.  Nicknamed "Little Evil," Pulver brings in a career record of 22-14-1.  Having fought all around the world, Pulver has faced notable fighters like Joe Stevenson, Din Thomas, Caol Uno, Dennis Hallman, Takonori Gomi., Hayato Sakurai, Urijah Faber, and Javier Vazquez. He is one of only two fighters to have two victories over B.J. Penn.

The scheduled opponent for Pulver is West St. Paul native Frank Johnson.

The entire fightcard, which will include several top amateur fighters, should be announced sometime during the week.

Seconds Out Promotions Presents Huge Night of Minnesota Boxing

The Minnesota State Heavyweight Title will be on the line when the two most well-known heavyweights take to the ring on December 4 at Target Center.  Joey Abell of ACR Gym has won his past five fights, all by knockout.  Abell has scored 24 of his 25 victories by knockout.  Rochester veteran Raphael Butler is coming in with 35 career victories and 28 knockouts.  The 24-year old has fought top fighters Malik Scott (31-0) and WBO title contender Eddie Chambers (35-1).

UFC 87 notes

Overall, I thought UFC 87 was a solid show. St. Pierre, Lesnar and Florian all performed well, if not dominant.

I also thought Kongo, McCrory, and Maia looked good. Hopefully each will get a push from the UFC.

Slightly disappointing performance from Huerta, but could partly be put on the excellent fight by Florian. Huerta (20-2-1) is only 25 years old and has plenty of time to get there.

-All four fighters receive a $60,000 bonus from the UFC.

One final note to those fans chanting "USA, USA, USA,..." during the Maia-MacDonald fight. Maia is from Brazil. MacDonald is from Canada...

Lesnar vs. Herring fight details

10:40 PM: Brock Lesnar walks out to the arena to the Motley Crue classic "Shout at the Devil."
10:48 PM: The bell sounds to start the first round!

15 seconds into the fight, Lesnar lands a straight right hand that drops Herring. Lesnar gets him to the mat and ground-and-pound for the rest of the round.

Second round is similar to the first. Lesnar takes Herring down to the mat. He lands several knees to the body early on and works his ground-and-pound for the entire round again.

Third round is more of the same. Knees, ground-and-pound, wrestling domination. Herring ends the fight with two black eyes and a messed up face. Total destruction.

11:08 PM: Decision is announced. All three judges score the fight 30-26. Lesnar improves his MMA record to 2-1.

Herring falls to 28-14. His first career MMA fight was in April of 1997. He is a veteran of PrideFC and UFC. Herring has fought standout veterans Evan Tanner, Tom Erickson, Mark Kerr, Vitor Belfort, Igor Vovchanchyn, current world #1 pound-for-pound Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop, Gary Goodridge, and current UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (3 times).

Herring is one year younger than Lesnar...

Just before the official weigh-in was to begin, Bruce Buffer escorted Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to the front of the stage, where he interacted with the fans for several minutes. Wanderlei Silva (in the corner of Maia) was also in attendance working the crowd.

Huerta, Lesnar, and St. Pierre received huge pops from the crowd as did Kongo. Florian, Herring, and Fitch got some negative reactions due to their opponents.

Plenty of Canadien fans in attendance to see St. Pierre and MacDonald.

Funniest moment: After McCrory and Cummo weighed in and had their pose off, Joe Rogan called it, "the battle of the nerds."
